Why does the biopharmaceutical industry use peristaltic pumps?

  1. The sterile, enclosed space created by the peristaltic pump principle: When using a peristaltic pump to deliver medication, the medication only comes into contact with the inside of the tubing, not with any mechanical parts of the pump body. This eliminates any bacterial contamination and the risk of cross-contamination.
  2. Easy cleaning and replacement of the pump tubing: The pump tubing of a peristaltic pump can be used as a disposable delivery tube. It is disposable and requires no cleaning of the pump body. Replacing the tubing is also very convenient, taking only 10-20 seconds.
  3. Minimal shear force during delivery, causing almost no damage to cells in the medication: The medications delivered in the biopharmaceutical industry are often proteins or living cells, which are very fragile. The peristaltic pump, through the principle of rollers squeezing the tubing, causes negligible damage to cells and the medication, making it significantly advantageous for drug delivery.
  4. Peristaltic pumps are easy to control and meter. Because peristaltic pumps deliver liquid medicine at a stable flow rate, controlling their operation is very simple. They can maintain high-precision delivery and can also achieve filling and dispensing through different control methods.
